Michael’s areas of expertise
• Cataract surgery, including toric lens implantation for astigmatism and extended depth of focus lenses
• All aspects of glaucoma management including laser and surgical treatments
Michael has over 20 years of experience as a cataract surgeon and has undertaken thousands of surgeries. He is also very experienced in all aspects of glaucoma management and was one of the first doctors in the UK to introduce Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) into his daily practice.
After qualifying from the University of Glasgow Medical School Michael undertook his general ophthalmic training in the South West of England, Manchester and Brisbane, Australia. In 2008 he completed a Fellowship in Medical and Surgical Glaucoma at the University of Toronto, Canada. Later the same year he was appointed as glaucoma consultant in Exeter.
Michael has been an NHS Consultant at the West of England Eye Unit in Exeter since 2008. He is the Clinical Lead for Glaucoma at the Royal Devon University NHS Foundation Trust and Chair of the Laser Safety Group at the Trust. He also holds national positions in Ophthalmology as Chair of the Expert Working Group of the NHS England National Casemix Office and as a member of the Clinical Council for Eye Health Commissioning.
Michael lives in Exeter with his wife and family. As well as walks on the coast path and moors he enjoys tennis and watching Exeter City FC.
