Glaucoma treatments can be highly effective if used early on in the development of the disease. If caught early enough, there are several glaucoma treatments that can slow or even stop the disease altogether.
It is not possible to cure glaucoma, with treatment aimed at slowing down or stopping further optic nerve damage. This generally involves lowering the eye pressures, which is of benefit even when the eye pressure is not above normal limits. Which is best for each patient requires an individualised assessment. Our glaucoma specialists are experienced in all types of glaucoma treatment and will talk you through the best options for you. Below we describe treatment options for the two main types of glaucoma, Primary Open Angle Glaucoma and Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma.
The recommended first line treatment for most people diagnosed with Primary Open Angle Glaucoma is selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) This applies a low energy laser beam into the trabecular meshwork, which is the primary drainage region of the eye. The eye’s response to this laser results in an increase in the drainage of aqueous fluid out of the eye, lowering the pressure inside the eye. Most people find this procedure pain free and easy to tolerate. Significant side effects are rare and recovery is quick, with most people able to return to work and driving the next day.
Regular glaucoma eye drops are an alternative first line treatment or are used in addition to the laser if the pressure remains higher than ideal. Your glaucoma specialist will talk through with you the best option in your case, taking into account your test results and personal preferences.
Treatment of Angle Closure Glaucoma usually involves two elements. Firstly, regular eye drops may be required to reduce the eye pressure. Secondly it is necessary to address the angle closure to prevent the pressure rising further. This can be done by laser iridotomy treatment or lens extraction (cataract surgery). Your glaucoma specialist will talk through with you the best option in your case, taking into account your test results and personal preferences.

There are many other different types of glaucoma and the best treatment depends on the diagnosis, level of eye pressure and the individual’s personal preferences. Following a thorough clinical examination and testing your glaucoma specilsit will talk through the treatment options with you.
For all types of glaucoma when laser and eye drops are not controlling the glaucoma effectively glaucoma surgery may need to considered.
